Undoubtedly, blood pressure is affected by the nutrients that enter the body, and it is positively affected by daily exercise... But what if the saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” also applies to dark chocolate?!
In a study published June 13, 2022 in the scientific journal Frontiers in Nutrition, researchers from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom found that higher cocoa consumption can reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure; Thanks to the high amount of cocoa.
Cocoa contains flavanols, which are known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. They are phytochemicals of the flavonoid family. It can usually be found in grapes, apples, and cocoa.

The English scientists requested the participation of eleven healthy people. They had to take, alternately, either six cocoa flavanol capsules or six placebo capsules containing brown sugar.
To study the link between cocoa consumption and high blood pressure, participants had to wear a blood pressure monitor on their arm and a fingertip oximeter that measures arterial stiffness.
The researchers then measured blood pressure before ingesting the cocoa capsules and every 30 minutes after ingesting them, and then every hour for the remaining nine hours.
Encouraging results
Study results found that participants had lower blood pressure and arterial stiffness when cocoa consumption was high.
Christian Hess, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine, said: “What we found indicates that cocoa flavanols do not lower blood pressure unless it is elevated.
The positive effect of cocoa flavanols on the cardiovascular system, especially on vascular function and blood pressure, cannot be denied.” .
